Dave
Smith (call him "Smitty") grew up in Downers Grove,
Illinois where he developed an early interest in music. While
enrolled in the Jazz Studies program at Northern Illinois University,
he performed in a variety of Jazz, Blues, Disco and Rock bands
in the greater Chicago area. He later joined the U.S. Air Force
Band as lead and solo trombonist, touring across the Midwest performing
at events ranging from high schools to jazz festivals including
performances with Count Basie Orchestra and backing up Dizzy Gillespie.
Next came two years at UW-Stevens Point where he completed his
music degree. During that time he met up and performed with the
inimitable guitarist, Greg
Koch, in the group, "Cold Shot".
Since
1988, Smitty has freelanced in SE Wisconsin as a trombonist and
arranger including 13 years with the "Booze Brothers Showband
and Revue", "Big Bob and the Ballroom Blitz", "The
Temperments" and most recently, "Cold Sweat and the
Brew City Horns".
With
recent resurgence of swing dance/music he performs with and arranges
for many groups including "Swing Nouveau", "Airmen
of Swing", "Mr. Lucky", "All Star Superband",
and the "Swingomatics".
When
providing his bio for this web site, Smitty inserted, "Is
this enough, or did you need more stuff about being a frustrated
Chicago sports fan!!!!!!"
