Mike
Murphy - Drums, percussion
Mike
Murphy grew up in Milwaukee during a time when jazz, rock and soul
music were melding together to create an exciting new music. The
Beatles, Motown and jazz artists such as Billy Cobham and Jack DeJonette
were strong influences in his musical development.
Mostly
self-taught, he studied briefly an the Wisconsin Conservatory of
Music, his career picked up steam early. In the seventies he was
a founding member of the revered Milwaukee jazz-rock group, "Sweetbottom".
Soon after that, he was picked up by the acclaimed jazz group, "Matrix",
which traveled extensively thoughout the U.S. and Canada. Mike's
powerful and precise drumming can be heard on the several albums
Matrix released on the Warner Brothers label. In 2002 Matrix released
"Proud Flesh" on the Summit
label.
In
another reunion project, Mike has recently hooked up with his Sweetbottom
co-patriots, including guitarist Daryl
Stuermer (of Phil Collins/Genesis) and Warren Weigratz (of Streetlife),
to record a live CD to be released later this year.
