Dave
Matsen - Saxophonist, composer, arranger
Dave
Matsen grew up in Les Paul's hometown of Waukesha, Wisconsin
where he studied guitar at age 9 and switched to saxophone two
years later. Early influences such as "Chicago", "BS&T",
"The Brecker Brothers", "Weather Report"
and 20th Century classical music would be instrumental in shaping
his musical direction.
While
a music student at UW-Milwaukee, Dave joined his first professional
band where he started developing his composing and multi-instrumental
skills; doubling on flute and keyboards. Shortly after that,
he studied jazz theory and composition at the Wisconsin Conservatory
of Music. His fiery sax playing and creative composing/arranging
skills have been featured in countless local and touring bands.
Presently living in the Chicago area, he has toured throughout
the U.S., Caribbean and India.
Professional
performing highlights include: "Random Walk" where
he composed John
& Ann [real audio file], Daryl
Stuermer of Phil Collins/Genesis, Grammy award winning Douglas
Spotted Eagle and Peter
Buffett. His sax playing has been featured on national TV
commercials for Miller Beer and Nutrasweet as well as on the
television series, Monsters.
Dave
is presently living in Chicago and working as a freelance artist.
As a founding member of Grooveology he says, "I'm
very excited about this group. To be able to write and perform
with this wonderful combination of talent is a dream come true.
Now where are my car keys...?".
